William Henley's Dictionary of Violin and Bow Makers
states the following about the maker.
Emile MENNESSON, born Rheimms 1842, died 1920.
Worked in several ateliers in Paris. Established extensive premises in Mirecourt 1876-1881. Associated with Martin and Joseph Garini some years previously, ultimately purchased the trade marks of that firm, henceforth he built his instruments under the pseudonym of Joseph Garini. Recipient of gold medals and "diplomas d'honneur" at European and American exhibitions. Modeling based on the Messie Strad. Spent many years perfecting his beautiful varnish.

J.T.L. Buthod violin, circa 1900. £795.00 stock no. WP29
From Haydn G Maj. violin concerto.
The label is inscribed:
BUTHOD, LUTHIER
Eleve du St. Vuillaume, a Paris

The Jerome Thibouville-Lamy workshops acquired the Buthod brand around 1885, this subsequently became one of their top models along with the Barnabetti, they are very well made from good materials and with nicely carved scrolls and "F" holes. This example is in sound condition, although there are two repaired splits hence the very low price. Both splits are on the right hand side, the lower split runs up to the bottom eye of the F hole and can be seen in the photo, the upper split is also just visible. They have been correctly repaired and cleated on the inside and do not affect the playability in any way. The back length is: 14.1/8 inches, (35.8cm.) Set up with high quality ebony fittings, Pro-Arte strings and supplied in a new case. An instrument with a beautiful full tone, the bass is sonorous and the treble is sweet. Very reasonably priced!
