William Henley's Dictionary of Violin and Bow Makers
states the following about the maker.
Joseph Aubry. Born 1873.
Joseph Aubry was the son of a guitar maker. He served an aprentiship in violin making, established his own premises in Mirecourt and in 1921 gained the first class diploma at Paris for the perfect tonal sonority of his instruments. He was also recipient of the 'highest honours' at the Metz Exposition in 1922. Moved to Le Harvre 1927. Henley devotes another five paragraphs expounding the quality and tone of Aubry's violins.

A fine quality violin by Joseph Aubry In beautiful condition, with a lovely patina to the rich plum red varnish over a deep gold ground. The violin is signed in ink on the inside back, dated 1933 and with the makers own monogram JA enclosed within F holes. The length of the one piece back is 14.1/16 inches (35.7 cm.). Fitted with ebony and rosewood fittings, Obligato strings and supplied in a new lightweight case. Joseph Aubry violins are quite rare and very sought after, this example is of the Guarnerius model, note the quality of the sound holes, scroll and button. Joseph Aubry was considered to be one of the greatest French makers of this period. This is a lovely instrument to play with a quick response and a clear vibrant sweet tone with a sonorous bass. A beautiful instrument for collector or player, highly recommended!
