William Henley's Dictionary of Violin and Bow Makers
states the following about the maker.
Chenantais & Le Lyonnais.
Born 1854. Dr. Jules Edward Chenantais. Celebrated doctor of medicine and occultist, also amateur cellist at Nantes (France). Formulated certain constructive principles, and investigated acoustical phenomena of the Maggini, Amati and Stradivarius. Collaborated with Kaul (violin maker) produced a cello that gained easy victory over a Strad. (in full sonority of tone) at a contest in Paris in 1910. Violins had a similar triumph in 1912 and their remarkable success in tonal suavity as well as brilliance was attributed to the perfection of their structure (as regulated by Chenantais) rather than to any so called secret of varnish. Subsequently associated with Le Lyonnais in producing 'ideal tone' instruments.
Violin by Chenantais & Le Lyonnais, dated 1931. £2,350.00 stock no. WP14
From Haydn G Maj. violin concerto.
The label is inscribed:
CHENANTAIS & LE LYONNAIS
NANTES 1931 No 148

Also signed in ink on the label.

A fine quality violin by Chenantais & Le Lyonnais a very well respected maker who's instruments are becoming quite rare. In excellent condition, although there is evidence of an ancient repaired crack running down from the right hand F hole and another above, neither of these are very noticeable and do not affect the tone, or are they structural. Made from selected woods, set up with all ebony fittings, Larsen strings and supplied in a new case. The length of the back is 14.1/16 inches (35.7 cm.). This is a violin with a lovely warm classy tone, well balanced and with a quick response. A fine instrument for collector or player, highly recommended!
