William Henley's Dictionary of Violin and Bow Makers
states the following about the maker.
Mermillot, Maurice.
was born in 1835 and started his violin making as a pupil of Gaillard and the famous J.B.Vuillaume. He then spent time as a soldier in Piedmont, Italy and while there worked for one of the Guadagnini family in Turin. He established his own workshop in Paris in 1876 and died in Mirecourt in 1901. He was considered one of the best French makers of the period.

A good quality Bernardel workshop violin. In the style of Lupot and labelled as such. In very nice condition without damage or repairs other than some minor varnish blemishes. A good instrument, well made and finished in a lovely warm red/brown varnish, the back length is: 14.3/16 inches (36 cm.). Set up with ebony fittings with new Pro-Arte strings and supplied in a new light weight case. Nice tone with a vibrant open sound, good balance and plenty of volume, very nice to play. Recommended!
