William Henley's Dictionary of Violin and Bow Makers
states the following about the maker.
BLONDELET, HUGUES, EMILE. Born 1875.
Joined the firm of Thibouville-Lamy at Mirecourt, 1890. Became co-director with Acoulon, 1908. Died 1928. Contributed much to the prosperity of the firm. Officer of Public Instruction, Chevalier of the Legion of Honour, 1923. Two grades of violin bear his name - Amati and Stradivarius models. Excellent workmanship: corners rather too prominent. Scroll sometimes with over done black rims. Red oil varnish, thick and tending to slight transparency. Tonal quality of considerable sonority and reasonable homogeneity.
A Nicolas Simoutre violin, dated 1885. £1,250.00 stock no. WP13
Bach Cantabile.
The label is inscribed:
N E SIMOUTRE et Fils luthiers A PARIS
21 Faubourg Poissonnière
Près du Conservatoire de Musique 1885

An interesting violin with lots of character. I know very little about this maker but the instrument is both labelled and branded inside on the back in two places. The back length is: 14.1/8 inches, (35.9cm). In good condition apart from one ancient repaired crack in the lower right bout and also around the wings of the F holes. The violin has just been set up with rosewood fittings, Pro-Arte strings and is supplied in a new lightweight case. A violin with a warm lyrical and balanced tone and a good bass sound. Plays well and is over 150 years old!
