A photo of the label:

With a West Country Violins certificate.

A violin by Charles Le Lyonnais, made in Nantes in 1939, labelled and branded with the Lyonnais clover leaf design with his initials. This example of this great makers work is typical of his instruments which are based on the Strad but with Amati influence. Made at the peak of his career when he was 47 years of age. He gained the Laureate at the Luthiers Exhibition in Paris in 1921, he studied under Emile Audinot in Mirecourt before setting up in Nante where he also collaborated with Jules Chenantais, an excellent maker in his own right. In very clean condition with just the smallest of blemishes, finished in a red/brown oil varnish of good lustre, new Larsen Resonance strings and supplied in a new lightweight case, the back length is 357mm.
