William Henley's Dictionary of Violin and Bow Makers
states the following about the maker.
Augustin Claudot born Mirecourt 1776.
Brother of Charles Claudot. Worked in Paris for some time. Workmanship excellent up to a degree. Large Lupot model. Yellow, chestnut brown or orange colour varnish of a clear texture. Good quality timber. instruments favoured by orchestrall players. Died 1843.

A fine and beautiful violin by a very good maker, Paul Hilaire, son of Camille Hilaire was born at Mirecourt in 1906. He was assistant to George Apparut before establishing his own workshops. He continued making fine violins until quite late in his life, his violins are based on either the Strad or the Guarneri models. This example is a Guarneri model. The condition is almost mint, just the very smallest of blemishesThe back length is 14.1/8 inches (33.8cm.), Set up with rosewood and ebony fittings of which the pegs are original, Obligato strings and supplied in a new oblong case. This violin has a lovely rich and balanced tone, a real touch of class! A lovely instrument for collector and player!
