William Henley's Dictionary of Violin and Bow Makers
states the following about the maker.
Bailly Jenny.
Daughter, pupil and successor of Paul Bailly. Established at Paris 1900 - 1927. Violins, violas and cellos made entirely by hand - assemblage of details quite harmonious. Clever and faithful imitations of the Cremonas, Lupot and Vuillaume, neatest workmanship. Whole scale of warm-looking varnish shades applied to give an illusion of the ancient. Strong tonal quality - pure and harmogeneous.
An interesting violin labelled H.Derazey, circa 1890. £2,350.00 stock no. WP40
1st. movement from Bach Cantabile.
The decorative label is inscribed:
H.DERAZEY
a Mirecourt
Exposition universelle 1855.
A good quality lightly built French violin labelled H.Derazey, probably from the workshops of Laberte-Magnié who was known to have continued the model after the death of Derazey. In excellent condition without damage or repairs, just minor varnish blemishes and dings. Please note! The two dark marks that appear on the left of the back are NOT cracks. They are simply dark grain lines that do sometimes appear in maple that has been originally dried flat rather than vertical, this is also often seen in instruments made by E.Mennesson. The back length is: 14.1/8 inches (35.9cm.) Setup with rosewood and ebony fittings and Dominant strings and supplied in a new lightweight case. This violin has a lovely warm oboe type sound with a chrystal clear treble. A touch of class!
