William Henley's Dictionary of Violin and Bow Makers
states the following about the maker.
Joseph Vautrin.
Born at Mirecourt 1875, apprenticed to Chipot-Vuillaume and then became principal maker in the atelier of Emile Germain, established own premises at Mirecourt 1898, thence to Chaumont 1900 to 1926 after which he moved to Paris but continued to use the Chaumont label, died 1947.
A John Baptiste Schweitzer copy, circa 1890. £725.00 stock no. WP15
Mozart.
The Schweitzer copies always have a nice quality and feel to them. They are quite different in their narrow body shape, more like the "long pattern Strad" This example is in good clean condition, no damage or repairs just varnish marks, the violin has a one piece back and a warm patination to the varnish. The back length is 14.3/8 inches (36.5 cm.) Set up with good quality ebony and rosewood fittings and a new set of Pro-Arte strings. The violin is supplied in a new light weight case. With a lovely sonorous sound, good balance clear treble and plenty of volume. This instrument is very good value!
