William Henley's Dictionary of Violin and Bow Makers
states the following about the maker.
Joseph Vautrin.
Born at Mirecourt 1875, apprenticed to Chipot-Vuillaume and then became principal maker in the atelier of Emile Germain, established own premises at Mirecourt 1898, thence to Chaumont 1900 to 1926 after which he moved to Paris but continued to use the Chaumont label, died 1947.
An unusual French violin, circa 1880. £395.00 stock no. WP15
Méditation de Thais.
An interesting French instrument by an unknown hand carrying a Bruxelles label with the name Mahillon. The back measures 14.1/16 inches (35.7 cm.). This is not a maker I have come across before but it is a well made violin. In good sound condition without cracks or repairs but the varnish is a bit scruffy and marked, it lends character to the violin! Set up with ebony fittings, Pro-Arte strings and supplied in a new lightweight case. A violin with a lyrical tone, good volume and a deep strong bass.
An early violin at a very good price!
