William Henley's Dictionary of Violin and Bow Makers
states the following about the maker.
Charles Bailly
Born 1879. Pupil of Lotte and Mangenot. Worked at Mirecourt from 1909. All his instruments were made entirely by hand. Artistic modeling and finished workmanship. Effective and transparent oil varnish of reddish - brown shade. Tonal sonority, imitations of old masters.

An good quality well made violin, possibly Laberte Humbert workshops. Neat and tidy workmanship and with good attention to detail. Note the fine figure to the maple used in the back, neck and ribs. The back length is: 14.1/8(35.8 cm.) The condition is excellent, no damage or repairs, just very minor varnish marks. Set up with rosewood and ebony fittings, Pro-Arte strings and supplied in a new case. A violin with a lovely warm and clear tone, good projection and ample volume. Very good value!
