William Henley's Dictionary of Violin and Bow Makers
states the following about the maker.
Cherpitel Louis.
Born in Mirecourt in 1877. He was the son and pupil of Nicolas Emile Cherpitel. He worked in Mirecourt initially but was also known to have worked in Paris. He father was an associate of Couesnon for whom both father and son made instruments.
A decent violin labelled Thiery a Paris, circa 1900. £895.00 stock no. WP06
Méditation de Thais.
The Thiery violins were made by a luthier by the name of Thierray who worked in Mirecourt and Paris, many of his workshop fiddles were just labelled Thiery a Paris as is the case with this one, some Thiery models were I believe also made by the J.T.L. workshops. Loosely based on a Strad/Guarnerius pattern they were well made violins, very plain but nice to play, this example has no repairs, just small varnish marks. The back length is: 14.1/8 inches (35.8 cm.). Set up with Pro-Arte strings, ebony fittings and supplied in a new case. A good smooth tone, well balanced and good volume. Very good value!
