William Henley's Dictionary of Violin and Bow Makers
states the following about the maker.
Cherpitel Louis.
Born in Mirecourt in 1877. He was the son and pupil of Nicolas Emile Cherpitel. He worked in Mirecourt initially but was also known to have worked in Paris. He father was an associate of Couesnon for whom both father and son made instruments.
A violin by Louis Cherpitel, made for Couesnon, dated 1928. £1,950.00 stock no. WP06
Sarabande in G minor by C.Bohm.
The violin is inscribed inside on the lower treble side:
fait par
L.Cherpitel 1928
The instrument also carries the Cousenon label on the bass side.
A rare violin by the French maker Louis Cherpitel. This is an unusual instrument in that it has actually been signed and dated by Cherpitel. His instruments are often seen but nearly always only carry the Couesnon label. The length of the back is 14.1/16 inches (35.7 cm.). Set up with fine ebony fittings, Dominant strings and supplied in a new case. Condition is very sound, there are two ancient crack repairs on the left hand side but both are non critical and hardly noticeable, other than this there are varnish dings and imperfections. It may look a bit scruffy but it sings like a bird! It has a strong vibrant tone with a very clear treble and warmth to the bass, excellent in the high positions. A well made instrument, a good collectors violin. Recommended!
