Born in 1873 in Mirecourt (Vosges).
Joseph AUBRY began his career as a wood carver and carpenter.
In 1892 he decided to devote himself to violin making. It is thought that he studied under Gabriel JACQUET, known as JACQUET-GAND.
Before setting up his own workshop Joseph AUBRY has been the foreman for two large Mirecourt workshops, first at Jérôme Thibouville Lamy's and then at Marc Laberte's workshop.
His instruments bear in ink, to the inside back, his signature, the date, and the place in which it was built. In 1922 Joseph AUBRY established himself in Mirecourt, before taking over JACQUET-GAND's workshop at 41 rue de l'hôtel de ville. Soon after in 1926, he moved to Le Havre on rue Aristide Briand. He later changed locations, moving to rue Jules Siegfried in 1932. He was assisted by his son Victor Aubry, a fine violin maker in his own right.
